Satellite Connectivity Brings E-Voting to Arctic Settlement
The new service was tested under real-world conditions.
The team at Bureau 1440 have provided residents of Nelmin-Nos, a settlement in the Nenets Autonomous District, with access to remote electronic voting. A low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation was used to establish the connection.
The Bureau 1440 team used two key technologies developed by companies within the IX Holding group. A Bureau 1440 subscriber terminal transmitted data over the satellite network, while a Kvadra_T tablet from YADRO, connected to the terminal, provided access to the electronic voting system.
In effect, enabling remote participation in the election served as a test of one potential use case for satellite technologies in the Arctic. Such trials make it possible to assess how the service performs under real-world conditions and how ready it is for the needs of future users. The system being developed by Bureau 1440 is intended to provide high-speed internet access across Russia, including areas without reliable coverage from terrestrial networks.
