In 2025, Russia joined the ranks of global leaders in the quantum race. Scientists delivered several major projects, including a 50-qubit computer, a prototype of a more powerful 70-qubit quantum computer, and a prototype of an integral coherent Ising machine.

The country is focusing not only on technology development but also on workforce training. Leading IT universities are opening new programs to train engineers in quantum communications. These efforts, combined with infrastructure investment and backing from major partners, have drawn interest from the global scientific community.

New Connectivity and Big Data

According to Yekaterina Solntseva, Director for Quantum Technologies at state corporation Rosatom, at least 10 countries are ready to cooperate with Russia on quantum technologies, including commercial projects. In scientific collaboration, China is Russia’s number one partner. Beyond China and the United States, around 10 other countries have launched their own quantum programs. Among them, Russia has emerged as the strongest.

“Russia has demonstrated one of the highest levels of practical results among countries that entered the quantum race after the leaders — the United States and China,” the expert said.

Quantum computing opens up new opportunities for technology development and big data processing, while quantum communications are reshaping the quality of connectivity.
