Russia’s Dzen platform has launched a news assistant called Glif, integrated directly into the app interface. After reading an article, users can tap a “What does this mean?” button that appears alongside the story. The assistant then provides a concise explanation tailored to the context and the user’s interests. Glif has been trained on more than 200 million news articles and is designed to break down complex topics into clear explanations.

“After reading a story, people almost always have follow-up questions. We decided it makes sense to address that need directly within the product. Glif helps users understand the news and what it means specifically for them,” said Alexander Tolokolnikov, managing director of Dzen.

AI for Newsrooms

At the same time, Dzen is developing tools for media outlets. One such tool generates multiple headline options for a single news story and tailors them to audience interests. In some cases, this has doubled click-through rates. The increase is driven by better audience targeting rather than simplified or sensational phrasing.

Dzen brings together more than 5,000 media outlets and around 67 million monthly users. The company plans to further expand its ecosystem with a focus on AI-driven tools.

“Our goal is to become the most technologically advanced news platform in the country and help the industry adapt to new conditions. We handle the technology so that editorial teams can focus on content quality,” Tolokolnikov said.
