Russia’s Defense Ministry is preparing an update to the “Pamyat Naroda” (Memory of the People portal), where neural networks will help reconstruct the sequence of events of World War II based on archival documents.

The AI system will analyze historical materials and automatically build a chronology of events while preserving original wording. It will also generate descriptions of specific episodes based on archival sources. As a result, users will see not fragmented documents but a coherent narrative compiled from authentic texts.

What Will Change

Another application of AI will focus on digitizing archives. Documents are expected to be made available not only as scans but also in text format. In addition, historical events will be mapped onto modern maps, allowing documents to be linked more precisely to specific locations and creating a unified picture of events.

“The Defense Ministry plans to make historical documents more accessible and develop user-friendly tools, including AI-based systems that can automatically build timelines and descriptions of events using original archival texts,” said Oleg Pogorelov, a department director at the ministry.
