In Russia’s Yamal region, artificial intelligence embedded in video surveillance systems has increased crime-solving rates by 10 percentage points, according to Sergei Neustroev, head of the regional security department.

AI-based analysis of video feeds from streets and public spaces has been in use in the region for two years. Over that period, the crime clearance rate has climbed to 91 percent, while overall crime has fallen by 18 percent.

Cameras Even at Bus Stops

Footage from surveillance cameras is actively used by law enforcement agencies. In 2024 alone, officers identified 789 individuals linked to crimes or listed as wanted. In 2025, that figure increased by roughly 50 percent.

The rollout of a unified regional video surveillance system began in 2020. Since then, the number of cameras has increased ninefold to about 6,500, with roughly 2,000 equipped with AI-powered video analytics.

The program is set to expand further in 2026. Cameras will be installed at city entry points across the Yamal region. Smart cameras are also being mounted at bus shelters, where they can detect vandalism attempts, issue audible warnings to offenders, and report incidents to police in real time.
