Russia Uses AI to Detect Road Damage and Clear Snow Faster

Artificial intelligence is helping Russian regions monitor roads, public spaces, and utilities with unprecedented speed and accuracy.

At the InfoTech 2025 forum in Tyumen, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko highlighted how AI is transforming local governance through the country’s Digital Region platform — a network that now connects 149 verified digital solutions from 26 regions.

According to Grigorenko, “in Tatarstan, AI-powered systems have cut snow removal time by 50%, and the process of detecting road defects has been reduced from two days to just one hour.”

AI Across the Country

In the Tyumen region, smart transport monitoring can now identify traffic accidents with up to 70% accuracy, while also providing route optimization for emergency and municipal services. Local authorities report that AI-based video analytics have already helped police solve more than 20 criminal cases.

Meanwhile, in the Novosibirsk region, AI assistants are taking over routine bureaucratic work such as processing citizen requests and drafting documents — freeing up to 60% of officials’ working time.

The “Digital Region” initiative illustrates how AI-driven governance can enhance efficiency and responsiveness across multiple sectors — from road maintenance to public safety — setting a nationwide model for intelligent public management.
