Autonomous Boats in Russia to Monitor Waters From the Air

A system under development will allow drones to take off from and land on a vessel’s deck safely despite waves, wind, and ship movement.

Russia is developing a system for the automatic takeoff and landing of drones on small autonomous vessels, the Transport Ministry said on its official Telegram channel.

The project is part of the Prioritet 2030 (Priority 2030) program. It is being developed by specialists from the Russian University of Transport and the Trapeznikov Institute of Control Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Development and Integration

According to the Transport Ministry, the system will significantly expand the capabilities of marine robotics. It will be integrated into small vessels and enable drones to take off from and land on deck safely during rolling, strong winds, and vessel movement.

“Our project addresses a challenge that has so far remained a technological hurdle: creating a fully autonomous ship-to-air loop. We are not developing a standalone component but a complete ecosystem in which a small autonomous vessel and an unmanned aerial vehicle operate as a single unit,” said Yakov Dalinger, project lead and vice rector at the Russian University of Transport.

The system will make it possible to carry out long-duration autonomous missions, including monitoring water areas, inspecting facilities, and conducting search-and-rescue operations.

A prototype of the system has already been built on a small autonomous vessel, and initial tests have been successful.
