Yandex’s Smart Camera Can Now Describe What’s Happening at Home

The Russian developer has embedded AI into an IP camera, enabling it to recognize what is actually happening in the video feed.

Yandex, one of Russia’s leading IT companies, has integrated artificial intelligence into its IP camera, the company said in a statement. The device no longer simply detects motion but can identify and describe what is happening at any given moment.

Previously, the camera would send a generic alert indicating that movement had been detected in the home. Now it provides more detailed descriptions of events in the frame—such as the appearance of a pet or specific actions taking place. Users can also program the camera to respond to particular situations.

A Proprietary Language Model

In addition, users receive a daily summary of everything that occurred in the room. AI-generated records are stored in an archive, making it possible to search for specific information when needed.

According to the company, the camera uses Alice AI VLM, Yandex’s proprietary vision-language model capable of recognizing objects and actions in images. The technology makes smart home systems more accurate and practical, as they can be programmed to trigger actions—for example, turning on a night light in a child’s room or activating an automatic pet feeder.
