Unmanned aerial vehicles in Russia may soon be used to sort waste at landfills, according to Dmitry Gachko, founder of the ITG Corporation and the IT Park Rus technopark, as reported by TASS. The drones have been trained to recognize and classify waste for further recycling.

Multifunctional Drones

At one of the hackathons, participants presented datasets designed for neural networks. These datasets allow systems to identify objects, detect waste and categorize it. The technology could significantly reduce the cost and time required for waste processing.

This is another area where Russian drones are finding practical use. UAVs are already employed to deliver goods and medicines, treat agricultural land, support inspection and regulatory work, conduct monitoring and environmental activities, and even assist in search-and-rescue operations. The development of new software expands their potential applications.
