Russia Is to Launch Civilian Drones From Designated Takeoff Zones

Authorities plan to open special areas where civilian UAVs can be launched under a simplified approval process.

Russia’s Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug is planning to open 25 designated zones for launching unmanned aerial vehicles, according to the region’s Department of Digital Technologies.

Geography of the Flight Zones

The new launch sites are set to be located in Khanty-Mansiysk, Surgut, Langepas, and Nizhnevartovsk, as well as in the Berezovsky and Nefteyugansk districts. The zones will be activated after approval from the Russian Ministry of Transport.

The designated areas will be available to public, sports, and educational organizations, as well as to local residents. The model provides open access for legal drone flights within clearly defined boundaries.

Simplified Launch Rules

As officials from the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug’s Department of Digital Technologies explained, drone flights within the special zones will follow a simplified procedure.

“Flights in these designated zones will be possible without obtaining permits from security agencies, local authorities, or Rosaviatsia,” the department said.

The Future Is Unmanned

Regional authorities link the creation of these zones to the development of unmanned technologies under the national project “Unmanned Aircraft Systems.” The new infrastructure is expected to make practical UAV use easier and significantly expand possible applications.

Earlier reports noted that the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug has ranked among Russia’s leading regions in terms of the number of drone launches.
