A Russian Mobile App Is to Brew a Better Cup of Tea

Students have developed a tea-making device that works like a digital coffee machine.

Russian students have designed a “smart” tea maker, a device built specifically for brewing tea. The project was presented at Moscow Polytechnic University and the Moscow Aviation Institute.

The automated kettle includes separate containers for tea leaves and additives. It can be controlled via a touchscreen display or a mobile app. The machine is designed to brew different types of tea correctly, including more demanding varieties such as pu-erh.

The students created preset brewing templates that users can adjust to their preferences. The smart machine automatically selects the water temperature, brewing method, additives, stirring, and the required amount of water. The system also cleans itself and can prepare up to 25 servings of tea per hour.

Warming Up the Office

The tea maker is intended for offices and public spaces where people want a hot drink. By the end of 2026, the team plans to complete testing and begin the certification and patent process. In 2027, according to the developers, the machine is expected to enter production on a made-to-order basis.

The project highlights how new technologies are reshaping even the most familiar parts of everyday life. Russia has a long-standing tea culture, with residents drinking an average of about 500 to 600 cups per person each year.
