Moscow State University Is Set to Launch Fundamental AI Research

The country’s leading university plans to focus on deep, foundational study of emerging technologies.

In 2026, Lomonosov Moscow State University is set to enroll its first students in a new Faculty of Artificial Intelligence. The announcement was made on Russia’s Science Day by MSU Rector Viktor Sadovnichy, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He noted that artificial intelligence has become a popular field of study across many universities, but MSU intends to concentrate on the fundamental research underpinning the technology.

There is, in fact, no precise answer to what artificial intelligence really is, or where its limits and boundaries lie. Like the human brain or the universe, it is infinite. That is why a fundamental approach is essential here, Sadovnichy said, as quoted by TASS.

Built on Core Disciplines

The new faculty will be grounded in mathematics and computer science. Its first academic track will be Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, with students focusing on the design, development, and integration of artificial intelligence systems.

New AI-focused programs are also being launched at other major Russian universities, including ITMO University in St. Petersburg, RUDN University, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and Bauman Moscow State Technical University. With support from digital technology companies, AI-focused master’s programs are also opening in regions beyond Russia’s largest cities.
