Rostransnadzor Deploys AI-Powered Cameras on Waterways

Smart surveillance systems are making Russian rivers and ports safer, as AI cameras take the helm in monitoring ship traffic.

Rostransnadzor is going digital to oversee Russia’s maritime and river transport. According to Igor Bolshakov, head of port activity and hydraulic facility oversight at the agency, artificial intelligence-powered cameras are now being used to identify ships at long range, as reported by smotrim.ru.

These 'smart' cameras come equipped with automatic recognition systems. They read vessel names, pinpoint locations, and transmit the data to a unified transport management system. The result is real-time tracking and improved safety on Russia’s inland and maritime routes.

The AI rollout marks another milestone in Russia’s push toward ‘smart logistics.’ By automating ship tracking and reducing the likelihood of accidents, these technologies offer a strategic advantage for managing the country’s critical waterways.
