Russia Launches Bank ID-Based Wi-Fi Authentication Nationwide

Rostelecom is rolling out a new login method that uses banking apps to simplify and secure access to public Wi-Fi across the country.

Russian telecom giant Rostelecom has introduced a new, user-friendly method for logging into public Wi-Fi networks. Users can now authenticate via their bank IDs—Sber ID and Alfa ID—offering a faster and more secure experience that aligns with national digital identity laws, according to Inc.

When selecting a Wi-Fi network, users are prompted to choose a preferred bank on the login page. The system then verifies credentials automatically and grants access. To use Sber ID, no card or account is required—just the bank’s mobile app.

Russian law mandates identity verification for public Wi-Fi access, and bank IDs are emerging as one of the most reliable methods. They eliminate the need for SMS codes or government portal logins, reducing fraud risks and wait times.

The technology is already live in most public Wi-Fi zones, with broader adoption dependent on the technical readiness of individual access points.

The initiative underscores Russia’s broader push to digitize public services and improve connectivity nationwide.
