Russian Expert: Digital Ruble Will Strengthen Long-Term Savings

As Russia moves toward full-scale rollout of its digital currency, experts argue the shift will give ordinary citizens greater financial stability and protection.

The introduction of the digital ruble will have a positive impact on long-term personal savings, according to Arseny Shcheltsin, CEO of the nonprofit Digital Platforms. In an interview with Russia 24, he said the new currency offers additional security for individual investors.

The statement comes as the Russian State Duma passed a bill in its second and third readings to formally introduce the digital ruble. Beginning September 1, 2026, the currency will enter phased circulation. The legislation also mandates the adoption of a universal QR code to simplify cashless payments for goods and services.

Banks and retailers are expected to implement support for the new payment method by September 2028.

Shcheltsin believes the system will help individuals recover more of their savings during financial downturns compared to traditional models. It’s also expected to incentivize longer-term deposits by improving overall financial security.

Banks across Russia are already preparing to leverage the digital ruble for automation, including features like automatic compensation payouts for delayed flights—paid directly in digital currency.
