Russia to Use AI for Certifying Train Operators

Starting this fall, Russian locomotive drivers will face online exams administered by neural networks as part of a nationwide move toward digital credentialing.
Russia is shifting the certification process for train operators—including those handling high-speed rail—to artificial intelligence. The Federal Transport Oversight Agency will introduce a digital assessment system powered by neural network technologies, TASS reports, citing agency head Viktor Gulin.
The theoretical portion of the certification will be conducted remotely through AI-driven online testing. Only after passing these assessments will operators receive their licenses to manage railway rolling stock.
The Ministry of Transport has prepared a full regulatory package to implement the initiative, which takes effect on September 1, 2025. The first batch of digital certifications is scheduled for September 3, with approximately 200 specialists expected to complete the process by year’s end.
Smart technologies are already transforming Russia’s transit systems. New trams equipped with driver-monitoring tools and advanced navigation systems are set to roll out in urban areas. Passenger cabins will feature climate control systems for enhanced comfort.
Russian developers have also announced a tram with built-in driver assistance powered by domestic AI. The onboard system will handle automated stops and energy optimization in real time.
