Russia Develops First Digital Twin for Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing

Scientists at Rosatom are building a digital twin for radiochemical facilities to simulate every stage of spent nuclear fuel reprocessing, aiming to improve precision and safety.

Rosatom researchers have completed the first stage of development on a software suite called VIZART-RDM, which will serve as the technological core of Russia’s first digital twin for radiochemical manufacturing.

The platform is designed to evaluate every stage of spent nuclear fuel reprocessing, from waste volume to the parameters of each technical operation. It offers a detailed simulation of key variables unique to radiochemical workflows, removing the need for manual calculations and reducing the risk of human error.

The initial phase focused on conceptual design, laying the groundwork for full software development. Once complete, the digital twin will allow comprehensive testing of new technologies on mathematical models—streamlining both design and modernization efforts for radiochemical facilities.

VIZART-RDM is being hailed as a scientific breakthrough, since no similar digital twin exists for this domain. The system is expected to play a critical role in advancing digital infrastructure within the nuclear sector.
