Russia Rolls Out First Batch of Biometric Transit Turnstiles

The country is betting on homegrown tech to speed up metro traffic by 40 percent — and plans to bring it nationwide.

Moscow’s subway system is getting a high-tech upgrade: more than 4,500 new “smart” turnstiles capable of accepting biometric payments are set to be installed across the capital. Built entirely with Russian-made components — down to the microelectronics produced in Zelenograd — the devices are designed to boost passenger throughput while reducing reliance on staff.

The first production run is complete, with installation slated to begin soon. Under a seven-year rollout plan, every designated metro entrance in the city will be outfitted with the new turnstiles. Officials project the system could cut boarding time enough to raise throughput by 40 percent.

The project is anchored in a newly launched manufacturing facility within the “Technopolis Moscow” special economic zone, backed by an investment of roughly 500 million rubles (about \$5.6 million). The site handles the entire production cycle — from electronic control systems to metal fabrication and plastic molding — using only domestically sourced parts.

Once the Moscow installation wraps, the manufacturer says it will be ready to expand production for transit systems nationwide. Officials see the biometric turnstiles as a cornerstone for modernizing Russia’s transport infrastructure, with potential applications extending to buses, trams, and even major event venues. For millions of passengers, that could mean faster commutes, tighter security, and a more streamlined travel experience.
