Russia Sees Surge in Software Registration as One-Day Digital Filing Speeds Up the Process

Patent filings for Russian-developed software and databases jumped in early 2025, fueled by a streamlined online registration system.

In the first half of 2025, Russian developers filed more than 19,000 applications with Rospatent to register software and databases — a 9% increase over the same period last year. Most of the filings, about 17,000, were for computer programs, while another 2,500 covered databases. The agency says the figures highlight steady growth in protecting intellectual property in the digital sector.

Applications came from across the country, with Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Moscow Region, Krasnodar Krai, and Tatarstan leading the pack. A key driver behind the surge is a new digital service for online software registration that allows developers to secure copyright in just one day.

Industry analysts note that this uptick in filings mirrors the broader expansion of Russia’s IT sector, which reached an estimated value of  $38,700,000.00  in 2024, according to CNews Analytics.
