Rosatom Backs National Supercomputer School in Sarov

Russia is racing to develop next-generation computing. At a forum in Sarov, students and experts explored AI, big data, and quantum machines, with Rosatom taking center stage.

At the Sarov Technopark, Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom supported the nationwide seminar “Center for Supercomputer Architecture Research.” The event brought together students, young scientists, and seasoned experts to discuss the potential of cutting-edge supercomputers in both science and applied technology.

The focus was on neural networks and big-data processing, but conversations extended to the supercomputers of tomorrow — machines expected to run even faster by tapping into photonic, quantum, and neuromorphic coprocessors.

Participants also debated the use of light in computing, the development of analog photonic processors, and the architecture of Russia’s Elbrus-8C chip. Software challenges for such systems were dissected in detail.

This year, under Rosatom’s supervision, Russian researchers built a 50-qubit ion-based quantum computer. By 2030, they aim to scale that breakthrough into a 100-qubit system.
