Russian Farmers Use AI to Diagnose Plant Diseases from Photos

A new machine-learning platform lets Russian farmers diagnose crop diseases instantly with a smartphone photo, helping stop infections before they devastate harvests.

Russia’s agricultural sector is undergoing a digital revolution. To detect dangerous diseases in wheat, apple trees, or tomatoes, agronomists no longer have to wait for lab results—snapping a photo of a leaf or fruit with a smartphone is enough. The breakthrough was unveiled at the 'Russian Field 2025' forum, according to RosAgroEco.

The system, developed by R-Style Softlab, is powered by machine-learning algorithms. It analyzes a photo of an infected plant in real time, compares it against an extensive database of crop diseases, and instantly provides farmers with a precise diagnosis along with treatment recommendations. This enables rapid containment of outbreaks and prevents yield losses.

The technology reflects a broader global trend of digital transformation in agriculture. Experts predict that in the coming years, artificial intelligence and robotics will be widely adopted across all aspects of farming—from crop breeding to harvesting. This plant disease recognition platform marks a major step toward building an integrated digital ecosystem for Russian farmers, combining genetic data analysis, weather monitoring, and risk management tools.
