Russian Railways has taken another step in its digital transformation strategy by showcasing advanced robotics. At the International Railway Salon “PRO//Motion.Expo,” the Research Institute of Automated Control Systems unveiled a robotic dog designed to inspect potentially dangerous sections of railway infrastructure, according to TASS.

The primary mission of these robots is to replace humans in high-risk environments, ensuring maximum safety and efficiency in railway operations.

“For now, these are research prototypes. In our view, mass deployment could become possible within the next five years,” said Agop Khatlamajian, deputy director general of the institute.

The Russian robot dog is equipped with state-of-the-art hardware, including technical vision cameras and LiDAR (laser scanners). This allows it to transmit high-precision environmental data to operators in real time. The device can reach speeds of up to 20 km/h (12 mph), climb stairs, cross gravel piles or track structures, and even inspect hard-to-reach areas, such as the underside of rolling stock.

The use of robotic inspectors will not only minimize risks for personnel but also significantly improve the accuracy and speed of inspections, ultimately strengthening the reliability and safety of the country’s rail transport system.
