Artificial Intelligence Becomes an Assistant to Primary Care Physicians in Russia

A new AI-powered medical system is helping Russian doctors detect life-threatening conditions before symptoms appear, marking a leap in the country’s digital healthcare strategy.

At the Fishermen’s Hospital in Primorsky Krai, a unique medical technology based on artificial intelligence has been introduced. The federal information system BARS now includes an analytical module called Webiomed, which acts as a personal assistant to primary care physicians.

The AI algorithms analyze patient health data in real time to detect risks of dangerous diseases before any clinical symptoms appear, according to the Primorsky regional health ministry.

The neural network evaluates more than 20 key indicators, including blood pressure, glucose and LDL cholesterol levels, oxygen saturation, blood counts, as well as results from routine screenings. The system can detect complex correlations among these parameters and, using evidence-based medicine, generate diagnostic hypotheses. In one case, for example, the AI identified a high probability of pulmonary embolism and cardiovascular complications in an 80-year-old patient, enabling the doctor to promptly adjust treatment and reduce risks.

An important feature of Webiomed is its automatic monitoring of electronic health records. The system generates alerts for physicians about critical health parameters directly linked to life expectancy—such as glycated hemoglobin and glomerular filtration rate—that might otherwise go unnoticed.

At this stage, the technology is available for general practitioners, but its functionality is expected to expand to specialist doctors across Russia, in line with the Health Ministry’s broader digital healthcare transformation strategy.
